Providing Independent Advocacy to Children and Young People (4 taught days) Unit 309

Many children and young people, including those who are looked after by their local authority or are 'in need' access independent advocacy. This module will support you to develop the skills and knowledge required to provide Independent Advocacy to children and young people who have physical disabilities, sensory impairment or learning disabilities or who are:

  • in need
  • looked after by the local authority
  • involved in family group or child protection conferences
  • in the secure estate
  • leaving care
  • in education
  • experiencing mental health issues

The module explores how to make advocacy accessible to children and young people, how to provide effective advocacy support and how to support young people through complaints processes. The module also examines the rights of children including rights enshrined within the Human Rights Act and UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

You should undertake this module if you are already providing advocacy to children and young people and wish to gain a recognised qualification or are interested in developing common core skills needed to effectively support children and young people.
